Delaware and Lehigh Canals

A pictorial history of the Delaware and Lehigh Canals National Heritage Corridor in Pennsylvania

Anthracite coal was as important a fuel in the nineteenth century as oil is today. The large deposits of high-grade anthracite in the mountains of the upper Lehigh River valley had to be transported to population centers to be of any practical use or have any commercial value. The canals featured in this volume by Ann Bartholomew and Lance Metz, were build in the early nineteenth century, primarily to move coal, and a distinctive culture developed around them.
