As Josh, son of the bridgetender at Griggstown, watches boats passing daily through his village on New Jersey’s Delaware and Raritan Canal, he wonders about the world beyond.  One day, the ten year old has an opportunity to join a boating family to care for their mule team for a few weeks. He passes through villages and towns, through locks and over aqueducts, all the way to the city of New Brunswick, seeing sights he had only imagined.
